Can more Indians afford to play games beyond their smartphones?

The cost of gaming hardware remains the biggest barrier for millions of players in India. While smartphone gaming has exploded thanks to cheap data and budget devices, moving to consoles or gaming PCs still feels out of reach for most households. A new push toward affordable hardware aims to change that.

Several startups and established manufacturers are now experimenting with low cost gaming devices built specifically for price sensitive markets. These include compact consoles that plug into existing televisions, handheld systems running Android, and cloud based services that let players stream titles without buying expensive hardware. The idea is simple. Instead of spending a large sum on a powerful machine, players pay a smaller amount for a device or a subscription and still get access to popular games.

Cloud gaming has gained particular attention. It shifts the heavy processing to remote servers, meaning a basic laptop or a budget phone can run demanding titles. The catch is stable internet, which remains uneven across smaller towns and rural areas. Data costs have fallen, but latency and speed issues still frustrate many users.

Local manufacturing could also help. If components are assembled within the country, import duties and shipping costs drop, bringing retail prices down. Some brands have already started producing controllers, accessories, and entry level consoles locally.

Analysts say the real test is whether these efforts reach the mass market rather than just metro buyers. If prices fall to the range of a mid range smartphone, gaming beyond mobile screens could finally become a mainstream option for Indian households.
