Playing more and more, struggling to cut back, or continuing to game despite its negative impact on everyday life can all be signs of gaming disorder. Yet new findings suggest that the tools commonly used to identify the condition may fail to catch it in female players, leaving many without proper recognition or support.
The problem appears to stem from how gaming disorder has traditionally been defined and measured. Most screening instruments were built around patterns seen in male players, such as long competitive sessions, visible rank climbing, or aggressive behavior. Female players often show different signs. They may spend hours in social or mobile games, form intense online friendships, or use gaming to cope with stress, anxiety, or loneliness. These habits can be just as compulsive, but they do not always match the checklist items that clinicians rely on.
Researchers point out that this gap can delay diagnosis and treatment. A woman who games quietly for hours each night may be seen as simply relaxing, while a man with the same behavior is more likely to be flagged as at risk. The result is a blind spot that affects care, prevention, and research.
Experts recommend revising screening questions to include emotional coping, social immersion, and loss of control across different game types. They also stress the need for more inclusive studies that track female players over time. Without these changes, many women who need help may continue to slip through the system unnoticed.
