Xbox has introduced a new internal team called Xbox Labs. The group will work on projects that fall outside the company's usual game development cycle. Its first tasks include bringing games to Apple computers and to the web, giving modders more support, and testing other ideas that could shape how people play in the years ahead.
The move signals a shift in how Xbox approaches its back catalog. Many older titles remain locked to consoles that are no longer sold, and players have asked for years to see them on modern hardware. Xbox Labs will take on some of that work, starting with Mac and browser support. That means a player with a laptop and no console could still access a range of games through a web page or a desktop app.
Support for modders is another part of the plan. Modding communities have kept older games alive long after official updates stopped. By giving those creators better tools and clearer rules, Xbox hopes to keep those scenes active instead of letting them fade.
The lab will also look at features that do not fit into a single console generation. That could include cloud play, cross platform saves, or new ways to control games. Xbox has not shared a full list of projects or a timeline. More details are expected as the team settles into its work.
