Valve Expands SteamOS With New Compatibility Tools for Arm and Android

Valve is widening the reach of SteamOS beyond the hardware it has traditionally supported. The company has introduced a set of system-level compatibility layers designed to let the platform run software built for Arm chipsets and Android packages, a move that could reshape what counts as a Steam machine.

The new tools build on the work Valve has already done with Proton, the translation layer that lets Windows games run on Linux based systems. Where Proton focused on x86 Windows titles, the fresh layers target entirely different instruction sets and packaging formats. Arm support means devices using those processors, from handhelds to lightweight laptops, can tap into a library that was previously off limits. Android APK compatibility opens another door, letting mobile style applications run inside the Steam environment.

For players, the practical effect is fewer walls between devices. A game or app does not need to be rebuilt from scratch for every chip architecture. For developers, it lowers the cost of reaching audiences on hardware that was once considered separate.

Valve has not framed this as a finished product. The layers are experimental, and performance will vary depending on the title and the device. Still, the direction is clear. SteamOS is being positioned as a flexible foundation rather than a locked down console system. If the tools mature, the line between PC, handheld, and mobile gaming could blur further, with Steam sitting at the center of all three.
