Post-video game depression: Scientists create tool to measure the phenomenon

Have you ever felt a profound sense of loss, sadness, or emptiness after spending dozens of hours immersed in a video game, only to reach its conclusion? This common yet often dismissed experience, sometimes called post-game depression or funk, has now been formally measured by researchers.

A team from SWPS University and the Stefan Batory Academy of Applied Sciences in Poland has developed a specialized psychological tool to assess this phenomenon. Their research confirms that for many players, the conclusion of a compelling game narrative can trigger a genuine emotional low. The feeling is characterized by a melancholic longing for the virtual world and its characters, coupled with a lack of motivation to start new activities.

The scientists note that this reaction is particularly strong following narrative-driven games where players form deep attachments to the story and its inhabitants. The end of the journey can create a psychological void, as the structured goals, social bonds, and sense of purpose provided by the game abruptly vanish.

This new assessment scale will help psychologists and researchers better understand the depth and impact of these emotions. It validates player experiences and opens the door for further study into how interactive stories affect our mental and emotional states long after we put the controller down.
