Owning Physical Copies Of Movies & Video Games Is Important - And Sony Just Proved Why

Sony has just reminded PlayStation owners why owning a physical disc still matters. Over the weekend, many users discovered that movies they had purchased digitally from the Studio Canal library were suddenly locked. The titles, which include classic films like "Ran" and "The Third Man," were removed from users' libraries without warning or refund. This happened because Sony's licensing agreement with Studio Canal expired, and the company chose not to renew it.

The situation is a clear example of the fragility of digital ownership. When you buy a movie or a game from an online store, you are not actually buying the content. You are buying a license to access it. That license can be revoked at any time if the rights holder decides to pull the content or if the platform loses the rights. This is exactly what happened here. Thousands of people paid for movies they can no longer watch.

This is not a new problem, but it keeps happening. In 2023, Sony also removed hundreds of TV shows from users' libraries. Other platforms have done the same. The pattern is always the same: a licensing deal ends, and the customer loses access.

This is why physical copies remain important. A Blu-ray or a game disc cannot be remotely deleted. It does not depend on a server staying online or a company renewing a contract. Once you own the disc, the content is yours. You can watch it or play it whenever you want, even if the internet goes down or the store shuts down.

Sony's move with the Studio Canal films is a strong reminder that digital storefronts are not libraries. They are rental services disguised as shops. The only way to truly own a movie or a game is to have the physical copy in your hand. Until companies stop treating digital purchases as temporary licenses, the disc will always be the safer bet.
