Netflix Still Has No Clue What To Do With Games

Netflix Still Has No Clue What To Do With Games

It has been roughly five years since Netflix first told investors it saw games as a key part of its future, not a side project but a real pillar of engagement. The reality on the ground, however, looks nothing like that vision. The company has released dozens of titles, hired and then lost high-profile developers, and spent hundreds of millions of dollars, yet the service still feels like an afterthought tucked into the corner of a streaming app.

The core problem is identity. Netflix cannot decide if it wants to make premium single-player experiences, casual mobile time-fillers, or cloud-streamed blockbusters. It has tried all three at different moments, often pivoting just as a project gains traction. One year the focus is on narrative adventure games from indie studios. The next, it is licensing big-name IP like Squid Game or Stranger Things. Then it quietly shifts to a cloud gaming beta that requires a separate controller and a dedicated app.

That lack of focus has real consequences. Developers who joined with the promise of creative freedom have left after seeing projects shelved or restructured. Players who downloaded the app for a quick game often find the catalog confusing, with no clear way to discover what is worth playing. And the metrics that matter to Wall Street, like daily active users or time spent in games, are rarely mentioned in earnings calls, which says more than any press release.

Meanwhile, competitors like Apple Arcade and even Xbox's mobile storefront have clearer pitches. Netflix, by contrast, seems to be throwing ideas at the wall, hoping one sticks. The latest rumor is a push into interactive fiction tied to its biggest shows, but that is not a strategy, it is a hedge. Until Netflix decides what gaming actually means to its business, it will keep spending money to stay in a race it does not seem to understand.
