The creator of the legendary simulation game Dwarf Fortress has weighed in on one of the most uncomfortable side effects of the AI boom, and his warning is aimed squarely at the corner office. Tarn Adams, who has spent decades building one of the most complex games ever made, says the pressure on bosses to adopt AI tools is creating a dangerous disconnect from reality.
"Everyone I know, their bosses are slowly getting psychosis," Adams said in a recent interview. He was not joking. His point is that managers are increasingly relying on AI-generated summaries, reports, and predictions without checking them against the messy, human reality of their own teams. The result, he argues, is a management style built on confident hallucinations.
Adams is not a Luddite. He has used AI in his own work, but he sees a fundamental difference between using a tool to assist and letting it replace judgment. The problem, as he sees it, is that AI outputs look so polished that they are hard to question. A boss who reads a clean AI brief might feel more informed, but in truth, they are just reading a smooth retelling of incomplete data.
The deeper issue is that AI does not know what it does not know. It fills gaps with plausible guesses. When a manager treats those guesses as facts, they start making decisions that make no sense to the people on the ground. Employees see the gap between the AI's version of events and what is actually happening. The boss, meanwhile, trusts the machine more than the humans.
Adams suggests that this is not just a productivity problem. It is a cognitive one. When you stop testing your assumptions against reality, your grip on reality weakens. And when the people in charge are the ones losing that grip, the whole organization suffers. His advice is blunt: if you are a manager, do not let an AI tell you what your team is thinking. Go ask them.
