The confirmation that Grand Theft Auto VI will technically qualify for this year's Game Awards has sparked discussion about how the voting process actually works behind the scenes. While the game meets the official cutoff date for consideration, representatives from multiple voting outlets have indicated that the practical deadline for receiving review code comes much earlier than the public eligibility window suggests.
This discrepancy highlights a long-standing tension in how game award shows operate. The official rules may allow a title to qualify based on its release date, but the outlets casting votes need adequate time to actually play through these massive releases before submitting their ballots. For a game as enormous as GTA VI, that creates a logistical challenge that no amount of rulebook flexibility can solve.
The situation does not point to any deliberate scheme or backroom deal. Instead, it reflects the reality that award ceremonies built around calendar deadlines will always struggle to accommodate games released late in the year, especially ones requiring dozens of hours to properly evaluate. Voters simply cannot assess what they have not received.
Rockstar has not commented on the matter, and the conversation remains speculative for now. What matters more is whether the industry can find a fairer system for handling these timing conflicts in the future.
