Darkest Dungeon Returns with First DLC in Six Years

Fans of the punishing gothic strategy game Darkest Dungeon have been waiting a long time for new content. That wait is finally over. Red Hook Studios has announced "The Fire's Edge," the first major DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon in six years. The expansion is set to bring fresh blood to the grim world, including two new playable characters and several gameplay features borrowed from its sequel.

The new DLC introduces a fire-themed region, complete with its own set of horrors and environmental hazards. Players will need to adapt their strategies as burning landscapes and new enemy types challenge even the most hardened adventurers. The two new heroes are designed to fit the fiery theme, though Red Hook has not yet revealed their specific classes or abilities. Given the studio's track record, expect them to bring unique stress mechanics and risky combat options.

Perhaps the most notable addition is the inclusion of systems from Darkest Dungeon 2. While the sequel introduced a more streamlined approach to travel and relationships, "The Fire's Edge" will adapt some of those ideas for the original game's turn-based dungeon crawling. This includes updated affliction systems and new ways for heroes to interact during expeditions. The DLC is expected to release later this year for PC, with console versions to follow. For players who have spent years mastering the original game, this expansion promises to make the darkness feel fresh again.
