'Alien: Isolation 2': Facing a ruthless and evolved Xenomorph in our Gamescom hands-on preview

Sega and Creative Assembly finally brought their long-awaited survival horror sequel to Gamescom, and we got a chance to step into the darkness. The sequel drops the slow-burn opening of the original and throws players straight into a frantic prologue with a fresh cast of characters. The tension is immediate, and the new threat is not just a rehash of the old one.

The demo starts on a derelict space station, all flickering lights and dripping condensation. You are not Amanda Ripley this time. Instead, you control a new protagonist, a technician named Mara, who is trying to restore power to a section of the station after a distress signal goes silent. The first few minutes are classic Isolation: reading terminals, rerouting power, and listening to the creaks of the hull. But then the motion tracker goes off. And it is not a blip. It is a solid, angry line.

The Xenomorph here is noticeably faster and more aggressive. It does not just stalk the vents; it drops from the ceiling, tears through bulkheads, and uses the environment to cut off your escape routes. In one sequence, we had to hide under a table while it dragged a corpse past us, its tail scraping the floor. The AI is smarter, too. If you use the same hiding spot twice, it will check it. If you throw a noisemaker, it will not just investigate; it will circle around to flank you.

The prologue is a tight, twenty-minute chase that ends with a desperate scramble for an escape pod. It is a bold choice to start with such high intensity, but it works. It shows that the developers understand the core fear of the original and are amplifying it. The sequel feels less like a museum piece and more like a living nightmare. We left the demo with our hands shaking and a strong desire to never set foot on another spaceship. The wait for the full release just got a lot harder.
