AI Keeps Making Gaming Worse and More Expensive, and the Worse Part is That It's Not Slowing Down Any Time Soon

We are a few months into what some are calling the AI memory crunch, and the situation for gamers has not improved. In fact, it looks like the technology is actively making the hobby both worse and more costly, with no real benefit for the people who actually play the games. The core issue is that AI features are being shoved into everything, from graphics cards to game engines, and the hardware requirements are ballooning as a result.

The most obvious pain point is RAM. Newer games are demanding absurd amounts of system memory, often because they are loading AI models for things like upscaling or NPC behavior. That means players are being forced to upgrade their computers just to run titles that would have been fine a few years ago. The cost of a solid gaming rig has jumped significantly, and for what? A slightly smoother frame rate that most people cannot even notice without a side-by-side comparison.

What makes this worse is that the industry shows no sign of slowing down. Every major hardware launch is now tied to AI performance, and every big studio seems eager to tout its machine learning tools. The problem is that these features are rarely optional. They are baked into the core of the game, so you cannot just turn them off and get the old experience. You are stuck paying for something you never asked for, and the price tag keeps climbing. Until developers decide to prioritize fun over gimmicks, gamers are just along for the ride, and it is an expensive one.
