The 1990s were a golden age for video games, birthing franchises that dominate today. Yet, alongside the blockbusters, a special breed of title emerged—games that found a fervent, dedicated audience over time, achieving legendary cult status. These are five such classics from that defining decade.
First is Grim Fandango (1998), a noir adventure set in the Land of the Dead. Its stunning art deco and Aztec-inspired visuals, witty writing, and unforgettable characters like travel agent Manny Calavera created a masterpiece. Despite poor initial sales, its acclaim has only grown.
The mind-bending puzzle-platformer Psychonauts (2005) technically missed the '90s, but its spirit is pure late-90s alternative. It follows Raz, a psychic kid at a summer camp for spies, exploring bizarre mental worlds. Its creativity and humor garnered a devoted fanbase that ensured its longevity.
For a truly unique experience, Planescape: Torment (1999) asked a profound question: "What can change the nature of a man?" This isometric RPG prioritized deep philosophical storytelling and dialogue over combat, set in the strange, multiversal city of Sigil.
The chaotic couch co-op of ToeJam & Earl (1991) on the Sega Genesis offered a funky, roguelike experience. As two alien rappers crashing on Earth, players searched for their ship parts while avoiding bizarre dangers, creating endless hilarious moments.
Finally, EarthBound (1994) in the West, known as Mother 2 in Japan, defied all RPG conventions. It traded fantasy for a quirky modern setting, following kids battling aliens with baseball bats and psychic powers. Its offbeat charm and emotional depth fueled a cult following that persists passionately. These games, each flawed yet brilliant, remind us that true legacy is often built by the players who never forgot them.
