35 Years Ago Today, Sega Released One of the Greatest Video Games of All Time

It was a cold February day in 1991 when Sega did something that felt impossible: they gave Mario a real rival. On February 23, 35 years ago, the company released "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the Sega Genesis. The game did not just sell consoles. It introduced a brand new hero to the industry, one built on speed, attitude, and bright blue fur.

Before Sonic, platformers mostly moved at a careful pace. Mario jumped on turtles and collected coins, but he never broke the sound barrier. Sonic changed that. The game was built around momentum. Players held the d-pad right and watched their character blast through loops, bounce off springs, and smash through walls of bricks. The level design rewarded players who kept moving fast, turning each stage into a blur of rings and badniks.

The character himself was a direct answer to Nintendo's mascot. Sega wanted someone edgy, cool, and modern for the early 90s. Sonic had spiky hair, red sneakers, and an attitude. He tapped his foot when you left him idle. He rolled his eyes. He was the rebellious teenager to Mario's dependable plumber.

The game's impact was immediate. It turned the Genesis into a must-have system and sparked the console war that defined a generation. Critics praised the graphics, the music, and the tight controls. Players loved the sense of speed. Three and a half decades later, the original Sonic still holds up. It is a pure arcade experience, simple to learn but hard to master. It gave the industry a new kind of hero, and it gave Mario the only rival who could keep up.
