Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered might be too retro for its own good, but they also don't make them like this anymore. The original game arrived in 2002 as a straightforward arena fighter, pitting Godzilla and a roster of other kaiju against each other in destructible cities. This remastered version keeps that core intact, for better and for worse.
The combat is deliberately slow and weighty. Every punch, tail swipe and atomic breath attack takes a moment to wind up, which gives fights a lumbering rhythm that suits the monsters but can feel frustrating to anyone used to faster modern brawlers. The roster is decent, with familiar faces like Mechagodzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah rounding out the lineup, and the destructible environments still offer some simple satisfaction when buildings crumble underfoot.
Visually, the remaster does the bare minimum. Textures are sharper and the frame rate is steadier, but the blocky models and stiff animations make no attempt to hide their age. The sound design is similarly untouched, with roaring monsters and crunching debris that sound exactly as they did two decades ago.
What holds up best is the local multiplayer. Putting four players in the same room and letting them smash each other as giant monsters remains genuinely fun, and the remaster preserves that chaotic energy without adding unnecessary complications. Online play exists but feels like an afterthought.
This is not a game for players expecting polished, modern mechanics. It is a preservation piece, rough edges and all, and it succeeds at reminding players why these licensed brawlers had a following in the first place.
