Solo developer HyperMad Interactive is taking a different path with its upcoming game Bloodfall. Instead of relying on pre-scripted attack animations, the studio is building the entire combat system around direct mouse control and fully simulated weapons. Every swing, block, and clash is driven by real-time physics, meaning your sword will collide, rebound, lock, deflect, and scrape against the environment exactly as it should.
This is not the usual hitbox-and-animation approach. In Bloodfall, your mouse movement directly translates into the blade's motion. A quick flick sends the sword arcing in that direction, but the weight of the weapon and the resistance of an enemy's blade will push back. If you strike a stone wall, the sword bounces off. If you meet an opponent's guard at the wrong angle, your weapon slides away, leaving you open. Even the environment matters, as you can use walls and pillars to block incoming strikes or angle your blade to slip past a shield.
The result is a combat system that rewards careful positioning and timing rather than button mashing. You need to read your opponent's stance, feel the weight of your own weapon, and adapt to every clash. HyperMad Interactive says this approach creates fights that feel unpredictable and alive, because no two exchanges will ever play out the same way. Bloodfall is still in development, but the core idea is clear: melee combat should be about physics, not canned moves.
