U.S. video-game spending falls in July as Xbox hardware sales decline

U.S. video-game spending falls in July as Xbox hardware sales decline

Spending on video games across the United States took a noticeable hit in July, falling 10 percent compared to the same month last year. The decline was driven largely by a sharp drop in console hardware sales, with Microsoft's Xbox line feeling the most pressure as higher price tags kept buyers on the sidelines.

Industry analysts point to a few key factors behind the slump. For one, the current generation of consoles is now several years old, and the typical mid-cycle refresh has not sparked the same excitement as earlier launches. More importantly, the cost of entry remains steep. With the Xbox Series X still carrying a premium price, many casual gamers are choosing to wait for deeper discounts or hold onto their older machines. Sony's PlayStation 5 also saw softer numbers, though the impact was less severe than on Microsoft's side.

Software sales, including physical discs and digital downloads, were mixed. Big-budget titles that launched in July did not perform as strongly as last year's blockbusters, and there was no breakout indie hit to fill the gap. Subscription services like Game Pass continue to grow, but that growth did not translate into higher overall revenue for the month.

The broader picture is not all doom and gloom. Year-to-date spending remains ahead of 2024 levels, and the industry is bracing for a stronger fall lineup, with several major releases scheduled for September and October. Still, the July numbers serve as a reminder that consumer wallets are tightening, and hardware makers may need to rethink pricing strategies if they want to reverse the trend heading into the holiday season.
