PlayStation is giving up on discs. Here’s what it means for video game stores

Walking into a video game store is something Isaiah Chavez hopes he'll always be able to do. The smell of plastic cases, the wall of pre-owned titles, the chance to trade in an old game for store credit - these are the small rituals that make up his weekend routine. But that routine is getting harder to keep up with as PlayStation quietly shifts its focus away from physical media.

Sony has been moving toward a digital-first future for years, and recent moves make it clear the company is ready to leave discs behind. The new PlayStation 5 Pro launched without a disc drive as standard, and the company has been pushing its digital edition consoles harder than ever. Meanwhile, major retailers are shrinking their physical game sections, and some stores have stopped carrying new releases altogether.

For independent game shops, this is a serious problem. New game sales are what keep the lights on. Used games, which rely on people buying physical copies in the first place, are also drying up. If players go all-digital, there is nothing left to trade in, and stores lose their main source of revenue. Chavez, who manages a small shop in the Midwest, says he has already seen a drop in foot traffic over the last two years. "People come in to browse, but they end up buying a gift card or a controller," he said. "The days of someone walking out with three games and a strategy guide are gone."

There is also the question of ownership. Digital purchases are tied to an account, and if a store or service shuts down, those games can vanish. Physical copies, on the other hand, can be sold, borrowed, or kept on a shelf for decades. For collectors and preservationists, the shift feels like a loss.

Sony has not announced a hard end date for disc production, but the writing is on the wall. The company is betting on convenience and subscription services, and it is hard to argue with the numbers. Digital sales now make up the majority of game revenue worldwide. Still, for people like Chavez, the change is not just about business. It is about the experience. "There is something real about holding a game in your hand," he said. "I just hope my kids get to feel that too."
