With Bioware officially shuttered, it's time to look back on one of the best sci-fi series in video game history. The Mass Effect franchise spanned four main entries, each with its own strengths and shortcomings. Ranking them is not an easy task, but it offers a chance to appreciate what the series accomplished over its run.
At the bottom sits Mass Effect: Andromeda. The game launched with technical problems and a story that struggled to match the weight of the original trilogy. Its combat was solid and the exploration had potential, but the characters and narrative never fully landed with players.
Next is Mass Effect 3. The closing chapter of the original trilogy delivered some of the most emotional moments in the series, yet its ending sparked intense debate that overshadowed much of the experience. The multiplayer mode, however, proved a pleasant surprise.
Mass Effect 2 takes the second spot. With its focus on character-driven storytelling and the memorable suicide mission, it remains a fan favorite. The tighter structure and improved combat helped it stand out.
At the top is the original Mass Effect. It introduced the universe, the Reapers, and Commander Shepard with a sense of wonder that later entries could not quite replicate. Its ambition set the stage for everything that followed.
The series may be over, but its influence on science fiction gaming endures.
