Just months after Xbox publicly celebrated the studio's award wins, Compulsion Games now finds itself in a precarious position. The developer behind the upcoming "South of Midnight" is reportedly the latest team to be affected by Microsoft's ongoing restructuring, which has already claimed several high-profile studios this year.
The news comes as a surprise to many in the industry. Earlier in 2024, Xbox executives highlighted Compulsion Games for its critical recognition, using the studio as an example of successful internal development. "South of Midnight" itself was positioned as a key title in Microsoft's portfolio, with a distinct art style and a deep Southern Gothic narrative that drew strong interest.
However, according to internal reports, the studio is now being evaluated for potential cuts. This follows a broader pattern of downsizing at Microsoft Gaming, which has seen the closure of Tango Gameworks and Alpha Dog Games, as well as significant layoffs at 343 Industries and Bethesda. The moves are part of a cost-cutting initiative that has left many developers questioning the company's long-term commitment to nurturing new IP.
For Compulsion Games, the timing is especially brutal. The team poured years of work into "South of Midnight," which was meant to be a breakout hit. Now, its future hangs in the balance, with no official confirmation from Microsoft about the studio's fate. If the cuts go through, it would mark yet another blow to Xbox's first-party lineup, which has struggled to maintain consistent output despite heavy investment in recent years.
