5 Video Games From The '90s That Didn't Live Up To The Hype

The 1990s were a golden age for video games, but not every big release delivered on its promise. Some titles were hyped to the moon, only to crash and burn upon arrival. Here are five that missed the mark.

First up is "Daikatana," John Romero's ambitious first-person shooter from 2000. Promised as a genre-defining epic, it arrived late, buggy, and with frustrating AI companions. The hype around its "I will make you his bitch" ad campaign only made the letdown worse.

Then there's "Sonic the Hedgehog 3D Blast" for the Sega Saturn. Sonic fans expected a fast, 3D evolution of the classic platformer. Instead, they got an isometric puzzle game with clunky controls and a camera that made you dizzy. It felt more like a tech demo than a proper Sonic adventure.

"Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness" for the Nintendo 64 tried to bring the gothic series into 3D. The result was a muddy, slow mess with terrible draw distances and awkward combat. Fans of the 2D classics were left wondering why the series abandoned its roots.

"Bubsy 3D" for the PlayStation is often cited as one of the worst games ever. The orange cat's jump to 3D was plagued by floaty physics, ugly graphics, and a camera that seemed to have a mind of its own. It was a painful end to a once-promising mascot.

Finally, "Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero" tried to turn the fighting franchise into an action-adventure game. The controls were stiff, the puzzles were tedious, and the voice acting was laughable. It proved that not every fighting game character needed their own spin-off.

These games remind us that hype is no match for solid execution. They are now little more than footnotes in gaming history, shadows of the excitement they once generated.
