5 Retro Video Games From The '90s That Ended Franchises

The 1990s were a golden age for video games, birthing iconic series that continue today. However, not every franchise survived the decade. For some, a single misstep spelled a permanent "Game Over." These five retro titles, while often remembered fondly for their ambition or nostalgia, ultimately became the final chapter for their respective series.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, released outside Japan as "The Lost Levels" in 1993, was famously brutal. Its punishing, often unfair difficulty alienated many players who had loved the original, causing Nintendo to reconsider direct re-releases of such hardcore content and effectively end this particular sub-series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3D Blast (1996) attempted to bring Sega's mascot into the polygonal era but was criticized for its awkward isometric perspective and slow gameplay. It failed to capture the speed that defined the franchise, contributing to a period of decline from which the classic 2D Sonic line never truly recovered.

The ambitious EarthBound (1994), known as Mother 2 in Japan, was a critical darling but a commercial flop in the West due to a misguided marketing campaign. Its poor sales, despite a passionate cult following, directly led to the cancellation of the sequel's Western release and halted the franchise outside Japan for decades.

Megaman X6 (2001 in the West, but developed in the late '90s) is cited by fans as the point where the celebrated X series jumped the shark. Rushed development led to infuriating level design and a convoluted story, diminishing the brand's reputation and leading to a long hiatus for the sub-franchise.

Finally, Donkey Kong 64 (1999), while successful, embodied the collect-a-thon fatigue of the era. Its overwhelming number of items and required backtracking with multiple characters were seen by some as a culmination of overdone design trends, prompting a major shift in direction for the ape's future platforming adventures.

These games stand as fascinating relics, each a case study in how high expectations, market misreads, or simply pushing a formula too far can quietly end an era for beloved characters.
