New ‘Voidwood’ Footage Details Gameplay Mechanics [Watch]

Santa Barbara Games brought its upcoming co-op adventure to PAX West this week, and fresh footage from the show floor is now giving players a closer look at how Voidwood actually plays. The new video, captured live at the event, highlights the game's core loop of exploration, puzzle solving, and shared progression between two players.

The footage shows a forest environment that shifts between a calm, sunlit state and a darker, corrupted version of itself. This seems to be the central mechanic. One player can interact with the light version of the world, while the other operates in the shadowed counterpart. Certain objects only exist in one state, forcing the pair to communicate and coordinate their actions across the two realities. For example, a bridge might be intact in the light world but broken in the dark one, so the player in the light side has to hold a switch while the other crosses.

Combat appears to be minimal, focusing more on timing and positioning rather than direct confrontation. Enemies, when they do appear, are tied to the corrupted state, and the footage suggests that dispelling them requires the light-world player to activate a cleansing device while the other distracts or dodges. The video also shows a simple ping system for marking points of interest, which should help with coordination when the two players are visually separated by the world states.

No release date was announced alongside the footage, but the game is confirmed for PC and consoles. The PAX West build appears to be running smoothly, and the developers have said they are aiming for a 2026 launch window. More hands-on impressions are expected as the show continues through the weekend.
