The march of technology has left many beloved PC titles stranded in the past. While nostalgia runs high for these games, the reality is that most of them are nearly impossible to run on a modern computer. The reasons are varied, but they all point to the same sad truth: these classics are effectively lost to time.
First on the list is "No One Lives Forever," a stylish 1960s spy shooter. The game was a critical darling, but its rights are tangled between several defunct companies. No one can legally sell or re-release it, leaving it as abandonware that only dedicated archivists can get to run.
Another casualty is "Tribes 2," a pioneering online multiplayer shooter. Its servers were shut down years ago, and the game relied on a now-defunct matchmaking service called GameSpy. While fan projects exist, the original experience is gone.
"Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds" used the Age of Empires II engine to create a unique RTS. However, it was tied to a LucasArts license that expired. Disney's acquisition of the franchise made re-releases a legal nightmare, so the game sits in a vault.
"American McGee's Alice" was a dark, gothic take on Wonderland. It was published by Electronic Arts, but the rights to the IP are split between the creator and the publisher. A planned sequel was canceled, and the original game, reliant on older graphics drivers, crashes constantly on Windows 10 and 11.
Finally, "Myth: The Fallen Lords" was a groundbreaking real-time tactics game from Bungie, before Halo. The company was bought by Microsoft, and the rights to the Myth series were left with the original developer, Take-Two. Without a clear owner, the game has no digital store presence and requires complex emulation to even launch.
These five games are a reminder that digital preservation is fragile. When a company folds or a license lapses, entire worlds of interactive art can simply stop working.
