30 Years Ago Today, The Greatest Video Game Console of the '90s Came Out

Thirty years ago today, Nintendo changed the way we play video games forever. On June 23, 1996, the Nintendo 64 launched in Japan, and it did not just offer better graphics. It brought the company's most beloved characters into full 3D worlds for the first time.

The system's name came from its 64-bit processor, which was a massive leap over the 16-bit consoles of the early 90s. But the real magic was the controller. It had a central joystick that let players move freely in three dimensions, something that sounds simple now but was revolutionary at the time. This stick, combined with the trigger buttons underneath, made games like Super Mario 64 feel completely new.

Super Mario 64 was the launch title that sold the console. Instead of running from left to right, Mario could now jump, swim, and fly through a castle and its paintings. Players could explore every corner of a level, and the game's camera system, while sometimes frustrating, set the standard for 3D platformers.

The Nintendo 64 also introduced four-player local multiplayer. Games like Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, and Super Smash Bros. turned living rooms into battle arenas. Friends crowded around a small CRT television, shouting and laughing as they raced or shot each other. That social experience is something modern online gaming rarely matches.

Not everything was perfect. The console stuck with cartridges while Sony's PlayStation used CDs. This meant smaller games, higher prices, and no full-motion video. Many third-party developers left for the PlayStation, but Nintendo's own games were so strong that it did not matter.

Today, the Nintendo 64 is remembered as the system that proved 3D gaming could be fun, not just a technical demo. It showed that classic characters could survive the jump to a new dimension. For many gamers, it remains the greatest console of the 90s.
