Steam Frame Shows Flashes of Brilliance Between Frustrating Hiccups

Steam Frame Shows Flashes of Brilliance Between Frustrating Hiccups

The Steam Frame's promise of greatness for stand-alone and streaming VR gaming doesn't quite connect.

Valve's newest headset arrives with an ambitious pitch: a lightweight device that handles both native Android-based titles and PC streaming without a cable. When it works, the experience is genuinely enjoyable. Games load quickly, the optics are sharp, and the wireless streaming from a capable PC feels smooth enough to forget you're not tethered.

The problems start when the headset stumbles. Tracking occasionally drifts in low light, forcing a recalibration mid-session. Some titles that should run natively stutter or fail to launch altogether, and the fix usually involves rebooting the entire device. Streaming sessions can drop without warning, leaving you staring at a loading screen while your PC sits idle in the other room.

Battery life is another sore spot. Demanding games drain the pack in under two hours, which undercuts the freedom the wireless design is supposed to deliver. The fit is comfortable for shorter sessions, though the weight becomes noticeable during longer play.

Valve has shipped updates that address some stability issues, and the core hardware clearly has potential. But potential isn't the same as a finished product. For now, the Steam Frame is a headset that shines in brief moments and frustrates in between, a device worth watching rather than rushing to buy.
