The producer behind the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has suggested that the video game industry could learn valuable lessons from the unexpected success of the Backrooms horror game. Speaking in a recent interview, the developer pointed to the low-budget, atmospheric title as proof that massive spending does not guarantee a hit.
The Backrooms game, based on a popular internet creepypasta, became a viral sensation with a relatively tiny development team and a fraction of the budget seen in major AAA releases. Its success relied on simple but effective environmental storytelling, a strong sense of dread, and word-of-mouth marketing rather than flashy graphics or expensive celebrity voice actors.
The Sonic producer noted that many big studios now operate under the assumption that a game needs a budget of hundreds of millions to compete. He argued that this mindset can actually kill creativity, forcing teams to play it safe with sequels and established formulas. In contrast, the Backrooms project showed that players are hungry for unique concepts and immersive atmospheres, even if the visuals are rough around the edges.
He also pointed out that the Backrooms team used free or low-cost tools to build their world, proving that innovation matters more than raw technical power. While he did not announce any specific plans to change Sonic Team's approach, he said the industry as a whole should stop treating big budgets as a safety net and start taking more risks on smaller, stranger ideas.
