Rockstar's decision to make GTA 6 fully digital is a terrible, anti-consumer move that makes me worry about the future of videogames

The gaming community is buzzing with unease over reports that Rockstar Games may release Grand Theft Auto 6 as a digital-only title. While the company has not confirmed the move officially, persistent rumors suggest the next blockbuster entry in the series will skip a physical disc release entirely. For many players, this would be a devastating blow to ownership and preservation.

An all-digital future sounds convenient on paper. No swapping discs, no scratched cases, no trips to the store. But the reality is far less consumer-friendly. Without a physical copy, players lose the ability to resell, trade, or lend their games. More troubling, if a digital storefront shuts down or a publisher revokes a license, that $70 purchase could vanish from a library overnight. Rockstar, a company that built its empire on massive, single-player experiences, would be telling fans that they no longer own what they buy.

This decision also hurts collectors and players in areas with poor internet infrastructure. Rural gamers or those with data caps would face hours of downloads just to start a game that previous generations could install from a disc in minutes. The argument that "digital is the future" ignores the fact that an increasing digital landscape should not erase physical media entirely. Choice matters. Forcing a franchise as massive as GTA 6 into a digital-only model sets a dangerous precedent for the entire industry. If Rockstar goes this route, it signals that even the biggest games can abandon physical copies, leaving gamers with nothing but a license that can be revoked at any time. That is not progress. It is a loss of control.
