For years, the idea of a good video game movie felt like a myth. Hollywood kept trying, but the results were often forgettable or outright bad. Then Resident Evil arrived and changed the conversation. The latest entry in the long running franchise has become the most successful video game movie to date, and it did not get there by accident. It got there by understanding what makes the games work in the first place.
The key was respect for the source material. Instead of stripping away the identity of the games, the film leaned into the atmosphere, the creatures, and the tense survival horror that fans know well. It did not try to be something it was not. It also did not assume the audience was stupid. The story trusted viewers to follow along without over explaining every detail.
Another smart move was casting and tone. The movie balanced action with dread, never letting one completely overpower the other. It felt like a ride through a world that already had rules, and those rules mattered. That is a sharp contrast to adaptations that treat the game as just a loose idea to be reshaped into a generic blockbuster.
Other studios should pay attention. A successful adaptation does not need to reinvent everything. It needs to capture the feeling of playing the game. Resident Evil has now shown that when you do that, audiences show up. The bar has been raised, and there is no going back.
