Pearl Abyss Explains Why Crimson Desert Uses Its Own Engine Instead of Unreal Engine 5

Pearl Abyss Explains Why Crimson Desert Uses Its Own Engine Instead of Unreal Engine 5

Pearl Abyss has shed light on its decision to build Crimson Desert on its proprietary Blackspace Engine rather than adopting Unreal Engine 5, a choice that prioritizes creative control over the convenience of a widely used commercial tool.

According to the development team, the Blackspace Engine gives the studio direct authority over how the game runs and how quickly it can respond to problems. With an in-house engine, engineers can dig into the code themselves and push out updates without waiting on an outside vendor or working around another company's roadmap. That level of access matters for a large open world project where performance, physics, and visual systems all need constant tuning.

The developers also noted that commercial engines, while powerful, come with built-in assumptions about how games should be structured. Those assumptions can clash with a project like Crimson Desert, which mixes combat, exploration, and simulation elements in ways that demand custom solutions. Using Blackspace let the team shape the technology around the game instead of reshaping the game around the technology.

Pearl Abyss acknowledged that maintaining a proprietary engine is more demanding. It requires a dedicated technical staff and long-term investment. Still, the studio views that cost as worthwhile because it keeps full ownership of the pipeline and allows faster iteration during development and after launch.

The team added that the decision was not a rejection of Unreal Engine 5's capabilities. Instead, it came down to fit. For Crimson Desert, having complete control over the toolset proved more valuable than the ready-made features and broader support that a commercial engine would provide.
