I showed ChatGPT my video game taste profile — here’s what it told me to play next

I handed ChatGPT a list of my favorite games and asked it to recommend what I should play next. The results were surprisingly thoughtful, and a little uncomfortable.

I started with my About Me: Video Games profile, which is essentially a curated list of titles I have finished, loved, or keep coming back to. It includes games like Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, Hades, and the original Deus Ex. I also added a few guilty pleasures and some recent indies that did not quite click. The idea was to see if an AI could spot patterns I had missed.

ChatGPT did not just throw out popular titles. It looked at what I valued: player agency, systemic depth, and writing that trusts the player. It suggested Rain World, a game where you are a weak creature in a brutal ecosystem. I had avoided it because it looked punishing. But the AI pointed out that my love for Outer Wilds and Subnautica came from the same feeling of being small in a world that does not care about you. That made sense.

It also recommended Pathologic 2, which I had dismissed as too stressful. The AI argued that my enjoyment of Disco Elysium came from its oppressive atmosphere and moral weight, not just the dialogue. Again, fair.

The most surprising pick was a game called Inscryption. I had written it off as a card game. But the AI noted that I like games that break their own rules and surprise the player. I tried it. It is now one of my favorite experiences this year.

Was it perfect? No. It suggested a few games I already disliked, like Darkest Dungeon, which it assumed I would enjoy because of the stress mechanic. But overall, it pushed me toward titles I would have ignored. That is the real value. It is not about getting the perfect recommendation. It is about letting something outside your habits show you a blind spot.
