Hideo Kojima, the legendary game director behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, has issued a stark warning about the future of media ownership. His comments come in response to a recent report that Sony is planning to phase out physical disc production for its PlayStation consoles by 2028. Kojima took to social media to express his concern, suggesting that the move away from physical media could have dire consequences for the preservation of art and culture.
"So, what is happening to video games in 2028, might also happen to movies," Kojima wrote. He described the all-digital future as "frightening," arguing that without physical copies, consumers lose true ownership of their purchases. He pointed out that digital storefronts can shut down, servers can go offline, and licenses can be revoked, leaving entire libraries of games and films inaccessible to future generations.
The director's warning has resonated with many in the gaming community who fear a loss of control over their collections. While digital distribution offers convenience, Kojima's critique highlights a growing anxiety about the fragility of a purely online ecosystem. As the industry pushes toward a disc-less future, the debate over preservation and consumer rights is only getting louder. For now, Kojima's voice adds significant weight to the argument that some things are worth keeping physical.
