Halo Under Activision’s Banner Might Just be What the Franchise Needs

Earlier this week, Microsoft's Xbox division announced that Activision, not Halo Studios, will develop the next Halo game. After the initial shock wore off, it got us thinking this might be exactly what the franchise needs.

The Halo series has struggled to find its footing in recent years. Halo Infinite launched with plenty of promise but saw its momentum fade as post-launch content slowed and player counts dropped. The relationship between fans and developers grew tense, with each new update met by a mix of hope and skepticism. Something had to change.

Bringing Activision into the fold signals a willingness to try a different approach. The publisher has a long history with first-person shooters, and its teams know how to build and sustain large-scale multiplayer experiences. That expertise could give Halo the structural support it has lacked.

There is risk here. Activision's biggest shooters follow a very specific formula, and Halo has its own identity that fans hold dear. The challenge will be blending that identity with fresh ideas and reliable production.

Still, this move could be the reset the series has needed for years. A new studio with new energy, backed by a publisher that understands the genre, might be what finally pushes Halo back to the top.
