GTA 6 Might Land Harder When It Stops Chasing Real Politicians

GTA 6 Might Land Harder When It Stops Chasing Real Politicians

Grand Theft Auto has always been a mirror held up to America, but the series has a habit of smudging that mirror with obvious jokes. Every new entry brings a wave of speculation about which real-world figure will get the satirical treatment. For GTA 6, the conversation has already drifted toward whether the game will take direct aim at Donald Trump or other recognizable political figures. That approach might be the least interesting path available.

The strongest satire in the series has rarely come from naming names. It has come from exaggeration that feels uncomfortably close to reality. Vice City worked because its sleaze felt timeless. San Andreas worked because its corruption felt systemic. When the games lean on thinly veiled versions of actual politicians, the humor often ages fast and lands soft. The joke becomes recognition rather than commentary.

GTA 6 is set in a version of Florida, a place already saturated with absurdity. The state's headlines regularly outpace fiction. In that environment, the game does not need to invent a stand-in for any single leader. It can aim at the culture that produces them. Social media clout, influencer economics, real estate scams, and performative outrage are all richer targets than one man in a suit.

Rockstar has always been better at building worlds than writing monologues. If GTA 6 trusts its setting and its systems, the critique will emerge on its own. Players will feel the joke in the traffic, the ads, the radio, and the missions. That kind of satire sticks longer than a caricature ever could.
