God of War Prime Video series: Cast, release date, and details

The highly anticipated television adaptation of PlayStation's legendary "God of War" video game franchise is gaining momentum at Prime Video. While an official release date remains locked away, deep in the realms of pre-production, significant casting announcements have ignited excitement among fans.

The series will follow the narrative of the critically acclaimed 2018 soft reboot of the game. It charts the journey of the once-vengeful Spartan god, Kratos, now living as a man in the Norse wilds, as he embarks on a deeply personal quest to fulfill his wife's final wish. To do so, he must mentor his young son, Atreus, in a dangerous world filled with gods and monsters, while battling the ghosts of his own brutal past.

Bringing these iconic roles to life are two major stars. Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins is reportedly in final negotiations to portray the All-Father, Odin, the cunning and fearsome king of Asgard. Meanwhile, the role of the mighty Thor, God of Thunder, will be played by none other than "Vikings" and "The Last Kingdom" standout, Clive Standen. The search for the actors to embody Kratos and Atreus is currently underway, with the creative team committed to a faithful yet expansive retelling of this father-son saga.

The project is shepherded by showrunners Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, known for their work on "The Expanse," with Rafe Judkins serving as an executive producer. The series promises to delve deeper into the rich Norse mythology and complex character dynamics that made the source material a landmark in storytelling.
