What began as a casual hobby for a premed freshman has evolved into a career-defining moment for Nick Martinez, a 2011 alumnus who recently helped curate Long Island Museum’s newest video game exhibition. Martinez, who once balanced medical school prerequisites with late-night gaming sessions, never anticipated that his passion for interactive entertainment would lead him to shape a public showcase of gaming history.
The exhibition, now open at the Long Island Museum, explores the cultural and technological evolution of video games, featuring rare consoles, iconic arcade cabinets, and memorabilia spanning multiple decades. Martinez worked closely with museum staff to select artifacts that highlight both mainstream hits and obscure titles that influenced the industry. “Video games are more than just entertainment—they’re a lens into how we’ve communicated, competed, and told stories over the past 50 years,” Martinez explained during the exhibit’s opening.
The collection includes everything from early home systems like the Atari 2600 to modern virtual reality setups, with interactive stations allowing visitors to play classic games. Martinez’s academic background in premed gave him a unique perspective on the project. “Studying science taught me to look for patterns and connections,” he said. “I approached curation the same way—tracing how game design evolved alongside technology and society.”
The exhibition has drawn enthusiastic crowds, including families sharing childhood memories and younger visitors discovering retro games for the first time. Martinez hopes the showcase will inspire visitors to see video games as a legitimate art form and historical artifact. “This isn’t just nostalgia,” he noted. “It’s a record of creativity and innovation that deserves a place in our cultural institutions.”
