After a string of high-profile box office disappointments, major entertainment franchises like Star Wars, DC Comics, and Harry Potter are facing a hard truth. Audiences are growing tired of recycled plots, bloated budgets, and diminishing returns on the big screen. The solution might not be another reboot or a spin-off series. It might be a full pivot to video games.
The numbers tell a clear story. While a Star Wars movie can still make money, the cultural buzz has faded. Meanwhile, games like "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" and "Hogwarts Legacy" have proven that interactive worlds can generate massive revenue and genuine excitement. A well-made game offers something a movie cannot: ownership. Players live inside the universe, making choices that matter. That emotional investment builds a loyalty that no two-hour spectacle can match.
For DC, the failure of recent films like "The Flash" and "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" suggests the cinematic universe model is broken. But the "Batman: Arkham" series remains a gold standard for superhero storytelling. A new, ambitious game set in the DC universe could rebuild the brand's credibility faster than another rushed film. It would also allow for deeper exploration of characters that movies simply cannot afford to develop.
The risk is lower than it seems. Video games are no longer a niche market. They are a dominant form of entertainment, with a global audience that craves immersive experiences. Instead of chasing the ghost of the blockbuster, these franchises should embrace the medium that lets fans live the story, not just watch it. The next great adventure for a galaxy far, far away might not be in a theater. It might be on a console.
