Five Horror Classics That Have Become Impossible to Play

Five Horror Classics That Have Become Impossible to Play

For those who like to feel a little fear from their video games, you'll be bummed to find out these classic horror games are basically unplayable today. The reasons vary. Some are trapped on hardware that no longer exists. Others are held back by licensing disputes, lost source code, or online services that shut down years ago. Whatever the cause, these five titles remain frustratingly out of reach for most players.

The first is P.T., the playable teaser that famously announced a new Silent Hill project. It was pulled from the PlayStation Store after the project fell apart, and since it only existed as a free download, anyone who did not grab it in time can no longer get it. Consoles with the demo installed now sell for absurd prices.

Next is Silent Hills, the full game that never came to be. It was cancelled outright, leaving only the memory of that teaser behind.

Then there is Fatal Frame, a series with several entries that never left Japan or arrived only on discontinued platforms. Regional locks and dead storefronts make legal access nearly impossible.

Rule of Rose belongs on the list too. The PlayStation 2 title faced controversy that limited its release, and physical copies now cost a fortune. No official re-release exists.

Finally, there is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Nintendo has never ported this GameCube gem, and its unusual sanity effects remain locked to that old hardware.

Until publishers revisit these titles, they stay out of reach for anyone hoping to play them today.
