European consumer protection authorities have launched a coordinated action against several popular video games, questioning how they sell virtual currencies to players. The initiative involves Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga, and seven other titles, according to announcements from the Consumer Protection Cooperation network.
The core issue centers on how these games package and sell in-game money, such as gems, coins, or tokens. Regulators argue that players, especially younger ones, often cannot easily understand the real-world cost of items because virtual currencies obscure actual prices. This lack of transparency can lead to unintended spending, particularly when games use pressure tactics like limited-time offers or layered purchase bundles.
Authorities also raised concerns about whether companies clearly inform users of their rights, including how to request refunds or cancel purchases. The action follows a broader review of digital fairness rules across the European Union, aiming to align game design with consumer law.
The companies behind the named games now face requests to adjust their practices. Possible outcomes include voluntary changes to pricing displays or, if necessary, enforcement measures. Consumer groups have welcomed the move, saying it addresses long-standing complaints about dark patterns in free-to-play games. The gaming industry has not yet issued a unified response, though some firms have previously stated they follow local laws and provide parental controls.
