Bungie has officially confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its last major content update in June, bringing an end to the game's long-running live service model. The studio announced it is canceling all future expansions and seasonal content, effectively putting the title into a permanent maintenance mode.
According to an internal memo, the decision comes as Bungie redirects its development resources toward new, unannounced projects. The June update will serve as a final narrative and gameplay capstone, after which the game will no longer receive new missions, raids, or balance patches. Players can still log in and play existing content, but no further support or events are planned.
The move marks a dramatic shift for a franchise that has dominated the looter-shooter genre for nearly a decade. Destiny 2 launched in 2017 and has since released multiple expansions, including The Final Shape, which was originally intended to be a major turning point. Instead, that expansion will now stand as the game's swan song.
Bungie has not detailed what the new projects are, but the studio has previously hinted at work on a new intellectual property and a potential mobile game. For the Destiny community, the news ends years of speculation about the game's future. Many players had already noticed a slowdown in content releases and communication from the developer.
The final update is expected to include a wrap-up for ongoing storylines and some quality-of-life fixes, but no grand finale event. Bungie thanked players for their support and said the servers will remain online for the foreseeable future.
