Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has officially opened a new 2.5 million pound gaming and esports facility at its Cambridge campus, marking a significant investment in the growing field of digital entertainment. The state-of-the-art space is designed to support courses in game development, animation, and esports management, offering students access to high-end PCs, motion capture studios, and virtual reality equipment.
University officials stated that the facility will allow ARU to double its capacity and student enrolment in these subjects by 2028. The expansion comes as the global gaming industry continues to grow, with demand for skilled graduates in programming, design, and event management rising sharply. The new hub includes dedicated areas for competitive gaming, as well as collaborative workspaces for group projects.
Professor Roderick Watkins, Vice Chancellor of ARU, described the facility as a "game-changer" for students, emphasizing that it bridges the gap between academic theory and practical industry experience. The university plans to use the space not only for teaching but also for hosting regional esports tournaments and community outreach programs.
Local tech leaders have welcomed the investment, noting that it strengthens Cambridge's reputation as a hub for innovation. The facility is expected to attract students from across the UK and abroad, further boosting the region's creative economy. With the gaming sector now worth more than the film and music industries combined, ARU's move positions it as a key player in training the next generation of digital talent.
