6 Forgotten Spider-Man Video Games That Are Way Better Than You Think

From the early days of 3D platforming to the rise of mobile gaming, Spider-Man has swung through countless video games. While titles like the 2018 PlayStation hit and the beloved Spider-Man 2 movie tie-in get most of the praise, a handful of lesser-known adventures have been left in the shadows. These forgotten entries offer unique mechanics, solid storytelling, and plenty of web-slinging fun that holds up surprisingly well today.

One such gem is Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro for the original PlayStation. Released in 2001, it refined the combat and web-swinging from its predecessor, Spider-Man 2000. The story, which involves Electro and a group of villains trying to unleash a dangerous virus, is cheesy but charming. The voice acting, featuring Rino Romano as Spidey, gives the game a Saturday morning cartoon feel that many fans miss.

Another overlooked title is Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, a mobile game from 2010. Long before smartphones had complex 3D engines, this side-scrolling beat-em-up captured the art style of the Ultimate comics perfectly. The controls were tight, the combos were satisfying, and it let players fight classic villains like Venom and Green Goblin on the go. It stands as one of the best licensed mobile games ever made.

Then there is Spider-Man: Web of Shadows for the Nintendo DS. While the console versions were mixed, the handheld port was a different beast. It used a 2.5D perspective and a fast-paced combat system that let players switch between the red and black suits mid-fight. The black suit gave Spidey brutal tendril attacks, changing the flow of battle. It was a compact, focused experience that did more with less.

Other forgotten titles include the Game Boy Advance version of Spider-Man 2, which was a top-down action game with RPG elements, and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, a co-op brawler that let players team up with heroes and villains alike. Even the 2008 game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows on the PSP offered a unique storyline and a darker tone that set it apart from its bigger counterparts.

These games may not have the polish of modern blockbusters, but they prove that Spider-Man's gaming history is deeper than most remember. For anyone looking to revisit the wall-crawler's past, these titles are worth digging up.
