The iconic puzzle game Tetris is renowned for its zen-like simplicity and ability to focus the mind. While its core formula remains timeless, numerous spin-offs have attempted to capture that magic with unique twists, only to fade into obscurity. Here are five such games that nobody talks about anymore.
First is Tetris 2, a 1993 release that complicated the classic by requiring players to match colored blocks in addition to clearing lines. Then came Tetris Blast, which incorporated explosive bombs into the falling block puzzle. For a more whimsical approach, Wordtris challenged players to spell words with lettered tiles. The puzzle genre merged with RPG elements in Tetris Battle Gaiden, a Japanese-exclusive title featuring magical attacks and character-based powers. Finally, 3D Tetris attempted to bring the franchise into a new dimension on the Virtual Boy, a console itself doomed to be forgotten.
Each of these titles experimented boldly with a proven formula, yet ultimately failed to dislodge the elegant perfection of the original game. They remain curious footnotes in the vast history of one of gaming’s most enduring legends.
